Following discussions between the Diocese of Chile and Luis Areyte, it has been announced that Luis will no longer continue with his plans to pursue ordination within the Diocese of Chile. Luis has been attending theological training courses with the diocese in recent years.
Luis has decided to reestablish himself in a barbershop business, which he had formerly practiced before embarking upon theological training. A number of Canadian supporters who have been supporting Luis as he had explored his theological training, have expressed the desire to continue supporting him for the next few months as he reestablishes himself within his trade.
Bishop Tito Zavala has accepted this assistance for a three-month period. It is therefore agreed that SAMS will collect such funding and pass it along to the Diocese of Chile for this purpose for the period from March 1, 2010 through May 30, 2010, in order to help Luis and his family successfully complete this transition.
SAMS ongoing support of the ministry of Bishop Abelino Apeleo is not affected by this change. SAMS Canada is currently partnering with the Diocese of Chile to cover the partial remuneration of Bishop Abelino as full-time pastor for the congregation of Iglesia del Salvador.
In 2010, SAMS will continue to contribute $1200 Cdn per month for Bishop Abelino (covering 60 % of the monthly stipend and housing budget). That commitment will begin to diminish in 2011, with the level of support gradually decreasing to 20% of stipend and housing by 2013, the agreement's fifth and final year.
For its part, the Diocese of Chile commits to growing its level of self-financing for this ministry.
Those interested in supporting these ministries are invited to send their donations to SAMS Canada, clearly designating their gift for the Iglesia del Salvador or Luis Areyte funds. |
